Staying Safe On Social Networking Sites

The popularity of social networking sites -- such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and others -- has expanded tremendously in recent years, with nearly two-thirds of Americans using these sites regularly. The number of adult Internet users having a social networking profile has more than quadrupled in the past five years, according the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The sites are becoming more ubiquitous for both personal and professional activities. The sites also continue to serve as prime targets for malware distribution and scams. A recent study reported that 91% of respondents have received spam and 54% were targets of phishing attacks on social networking sites. While there has been increased attention to addressing security concerns relating to social networking sites, you need to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions when using them has never been greater.

What are the security concerns of social networking sites?
Social networking sites continue to grow in popularity as attack vectors because of the volume of users and the amount of personal information that is posted. The nature of social networking sites encourages you to post personal information. The perceived anonymity and false sense of security of the Internet may cause users to provide more information about themselves and their life online than they would to a stranger in person.
The information you post online could be used by those with malicious intent to conduct social engineering scams and attempt to steal your identity for access to your financial data. For example, many individuals are tempted to click on a video they see on a friend's page. Unfortunately, these videos may lead to a malicious website. When you access a site that has malicious code, your machine could become infected.
What can I do to be safe?
  • Keep your system updated: Ensure that any computer you use to connect to a social networking site has proper security measures in place, including anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a firewall. Make sure you keep them up-to-date. Keep your operating system updated and patched. Set the configuration to "auto update" so patches can be applied automatically without intervention.
  • Use strong passwords: Protect your social networking account with a strong password. Do not share this password with anyone or use it for other sites. In addition, some social networking sites support features for stronger authentication, such as using one-time passwords when logging in from public computers or using your phone as part of the login process. Enable these features where possible. It is critical that passwords used on social networking sites not be used on other sites.
  • Links: Be cautious when clicking on links. If a link seems odd, suspicious, or too good to be true, do not click on it...even if the link is on your most trusted friend's page. Your friend's account may have been hijacked or infected and now be spreading malware.
  • Scams: Criminals take advantage of the open nature of social networking sites to defraud individuals. Such scams sometimes use the pretext of an offer for a job or money. Another common scam uses hijacked accounts to contact the victim's friends with requests for help, claiming that the person was robbed in foreign country and needs money. Be cautious when contacted on a social networking site with a request for money or with an offer that's surprisingly good.
  • Privacy: Do not assume privacy on social networking sites. For both business and personal use, confidential information should not be shared. You should only post information you are comfortable disclosing to a complete stranger. Review a site's privacy policy. Some sites may share information such as email addresses or user preferences with other parties. If a site's privacy policy is vague or does not properly protect your information, do not use the site.
  • Personal Information: Do not respond to an email requesting personal information or that ask you to "verify your information" or to "confirm your user-id and password."
  • Be cautious about installing applications: Some social networking sites provide the ability to add or install third party applications, such as games. Keep in mind there is little or no quality control or review of these applications and they may have full access to your account and the data you share. Malicious applications can use this access to interact with your friends on your behalf and to steal and misuse personal data. Only install applications that come from trusted, well-known sites. If you are no longer using the app, remove it. Also, please note that installing some applications may modify your security and privacy settings.

What is the optimal size for profile pictures on Facebook? If the loaded image is too large the system will automatically shrink the image to maintain the standard proportions and in most cases the image is small and blurry, if the image loaded is too small it becomes scarcely visible.
Facebook does not indicate which both the right size for the images in profile, requires only that these do not exceed the 4MB of weight, so that they can be thumbnails. But they do not tell us anything further about the best format to use to make it clear that they are.
The site that we announce today allows you to create your profile picture long, with the maximum possible size of Facebook that is 180x450 pixels. How to merge two Facebook Pages

Today we continue with Tricks for Facebook Pages. This post should be of great interest to current administrators of pages, webmasters or whoever wants to become one. Everyday on Facebook thousands of pages are created, some are growing rapidly, some have only a few members, but others have only created confusion.
Have you ever found two pages with the same name? It is rare. From February 1, for example, Facebook has stopped pages for applications and now requires the owners of these applications to create pages and migrate all the fans. As a result Page duplicates were created with the same subject.
Another case is that causing issues are the function places. When you check in to a new place on Facebook, you create a special page for that site unless the page for that location, commercial city, and brand already existed. This check-in then creates a duplicate page and ultimately creates confusion.
Merge Facebook Pages
Few know that on Facebook you can merge two pages that have the same name. This merger also migrates the likes over to the selected page. Follow these instructions.
  1. Go to Page (business or place) with the most “Likes” or one that you will keep.
  2. Click on the Edit Page in the top right of the page.
  3. From the left sidebar, select Resources.
  4. Click on the link Merge duplicate pages . If you do not see the link it means that you are not administrator of two pages that have a similar name. The link is only available if you administer both pages with similar names.
  5. A dialog box will display the pages and sites managed by you, which can be joined. Then select the pages you want to merge. (If you’re joining a site and this page must have the same address address)
Once you start the migration process, as contained in the window, status updates, photos, videos and notes on the page will be deleted. The Page with less Likes will be permanently deleted, but Likes will be migrated on to the page that you have chosen to keep.
Finally, we need to point out that the process is not immediate, depending on the number of Likes migrating may take a few hours. (One of our tests with the migration of 2000 users, took several hours but everything went smoothly).

How to add the best applications to your Timeline

Apps for Timeline
The Timeline has already been activated by many users of Facebook, and soon will be activated automatically and mandatorily to everyone. Beyond the criticism of the appearance we must admit that the features introduced with the Timeline are really innovative and useful.
An example this innovation is how applications are integrated into the TimelineThis new feature allows the integration of the profile sites or applications, and allows us to say what we are doing to our friendsWe can then communicate that we are listening to music, reading news, what we’re cooking, what sport we are practicing and anything else that comes from the imagination of developers we are able to share without having to physically share. Before explaining the operation of these applications here are the videos ( 1 and 2 ) introduction of Facebook:

How to add an application to the Timeline

The complete list of applications for the Timeline are here: http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline/apps
At this link you can browse through dozens and dozens of applications, divided by categories: Entertainment, Fitness, Food and Cooking, Gifts, Music, News, Shopping and Fashion, Travel and more.
To add an application to the Timeline just click on the name and configure the permissions dialog box.

Foodily

Application Privacy

Many of you are annoyed to find friends to talk about all the things they’re doing, which is why Facebook makes it immediately clear that you can set the privacy settings for each application. In the dialog box it is clear who can see it :
Foodily settings
You can then choose to only close friends can see what music you are listening, or if anyone can see that you are practicing a sport, if only a few friends (the “Custom) can see what you are reading or cooking, and so on.
The list of applications you have added to the Timeline, with their privacy settings are available at your account settings, the applications tab.

And the games?

Games List
The games behave like applications, and are shown in box on your Timeline and is communicated to your friends (or whoever you want) when you are playing. The full list of games (and requests for applications) can be found on the dashboard: http://www.facebook.com/games

How to create a book of your profile

Today we will show you a service that automatically creates a book from your Facebook profile.
The service that we are talking about is called SocialMemories. It's an application developed by Deutsche Post (Deutsche Post DHL). You need to connect this application to your page and give it permission. There are several required authorizations, because the application needs to create statistics on your profile and it needs access to information contained on your profile to do it. If you value privacy, after creating the book, you can remove the application.
Having secured permission, click the middle button to "Create a new book" to start creating the book.
The book that is created will not only be browsable online for free, you can also download the PDF or order a printed copy to receive it at home. The creation process takes a few minutes, the application will browse all the information in your facebook profile and generate custom statistics.
As soon as the book is ready you can click on "browse books" to browse online for free. You can also choose the "timeframe" which is the period of time from which to extrapolate the content.
your Book Facebook
The book is structured with a cover, an index and the various chapters. Each page tells the story of your profile with more moments that have marked it. You'll find the most popular statistics such as status (the most commented or the one with the largest number I like), the most popular picture, my friend / more tagged / a on your photos. You will also have general statistics about the news published by you, your friends, your activities, music and photos, events and more. You can also choose to crop each photo on the book, he passes on with the mouse and clicking on Edit.
After choosing the colors and language of the book, click "Continue" and you'll finally be able to share the book for free (although in reality it is only created an album on your profile with some of the pages the book), download it as a PDF (for 3.90 € or $4.82) or decide to receive prints (about 19 € or $23).

5 Tricks that Every Marketer Needs to Know to Exploit the New Facebook Page Design

Come March 30th 2012 every active Facebook Fan Page will be flipped over to the new design called The Timeline. Personal Profiles have been using a similar design for some time now. (Pages can choose to push the new design live before that date, but you might want to read the rest of this post before you do so.)
Plenty of posts have been written about all the new features, but I want to point out a few that I think are ripe for marketers.
The obligatory debate rages on about whether or not this format is good or bad for companies, smart marketers are discovering some tweak that need to be made in order to get the most from the new design. (You can get some helpful tips on pages from the Facebook Help page as well)
The Cover Image
The Cover Image dominates the Facebook real estate
The biggest change from a design standpoint is the addition of what Facebook is calling the Cover Image. This 851 x 315 pixel image dominates the head of the page and while this tip isn’t much of a trick as a reality – use this space!
Because the image so dominates the design of the page make sure you send a very strong visual image with this real estate. There are some rules that Facebook is going to enforce, such as no calls to action and no references to “Like” or other Facebook terms.
You will also have the ability to tuck a profile kind of square image (180 x 180) into the cover. The sizes and position of these images are fixed but you can get pretty creative with this space. The main bit of advice is to get an image that says a lot about what your brand is all about.
The About Box
The About tag offers a nice branding opportunity
Down below the Cover Image is the About tab. This box links to the traditional about page that has always existed. However, you now have the ability to dictate what show up on your Facebook homepage in this box.
Edit your about settings to dictate what shows on the about tab
If you’re set up as a local business in your Facebook About settings then the default for the About box is your address and phone. This may be fine, but if you would rather have a tagline and link to your website, then edit your About settings. Keep the text short, about 90 characters including web address, so that it doesn’t fall off the page.
Tab Calls to Action
Create custom calls to action for your other pages and apps
To the right of the About box you’ll see images for all of your current pages and apps or what used to be called tabs. You can now have 12 apps and pages listed and the first four will show up on this bar.
Here’s the cool trick for this one. Now you get to create images for these apps instead of simply using the default app or page images. So now if you want to send someone to a page to grab a free eBook you can use an image to create a call to action. You simply open the page and hit edit settings and then upload a 111 x 74 pixel image that you want to represent your page. You can rearrange the order of the tabs to make the four most important stand out.
The Pin
You can pin an item to the top of your page for 7 days
Another way to bring focus to something you are marketing is to pin a story or item to the top of the page. As the admin you can pin a story for up to 7 days and will appear as your top story.
To pin an item you simply click on the edit button to the top right of a story and hit Pin to Top.
The Star
When you star or highlight an item it spreads across both columns
Facebook lines the posts and updates on your page up in two columns. If you want to bring special emphasis to an important post or highlight a product launch you can hit the star in the upper right corner of the update to highlight it.
This makes the post spread across the page and brings special emphasis to it.
Take the time to update these little features today. I’ve seen a traffic spike from Facebook due to some of these more marketing friendly little tweaks.
In the end though it’s still about the content. Make sure you continue to invest in the wall and creating visually and mentally stimulating content.

Workaround to View All Old Messages in Facebook

Facebook is hitting another glitch, this time round with Facebook Messages. Since around early July 2012, many Facebook users who log on to view the messages, emails and conversations with friends, colleagues, family members, or even customers and suppliers, are shocked to discover all their old messages “disappeared” from inbox which otherwise full of hundreds if not thousands of threads.

Luckily the old messages are not actually “missing” or “deleted” from Facebook account. Instead, probably due to some glitches, Facebook Messages only display the latest 20 conversations on the each Messages views (Inbox, Other, Sent, Archived, Email and Spam). And the “hidden” messages can still be retrieved by searching for the content in the email or the name of the friend (but even searching also only returns 20 results).
If you can’t remember who you’ve talked to or there are simply too many messages to look for, here’s a workaround to look at the whole inbox of Facebook Messages, just append ?page=# (with # been a digit reflecting the page number beginning from 1) to the end of the Facebook Messages’ URL to access the messages page by page.
Note that the “next page” is starting from page 1. In other words, page 2 is page 1 in the URL.
For example, to display 21th to 40th conversation threads which is on the next page, use the following URL:
Likewise for the subsequent page 2 for messages from 41th to 60th, and so on:
View All Old Facebook Messages
To view the archive, unread, sent, email or spam that are shown using query, append the &page=# to the end of the URL, with # been the number of subsequent pages, starting from 1 as page 2.
For example, the following URL shows the conversation 21 to 40 in Archived of Facebook Messages:
Showing Full Facebook Messages
The trick above should work in messaging system of Facebook Fan Pages too.
Alternatively, just use the Facebook Mobile app for iOS and Android, etc., which does not seem to have this issue.
