The teardowns never lie! You know how we've been telling you the Play Store is getting a Wishlist feature? It's rolling out now on a per-account basis. You don't have to download anything, everything is already built into 3.9.16. Wishlists are basically a bookmark feature, which lets you save a list of apps.
We've got pictures!

Once your account gets enabled, go to any app page on the Play Store, and you'll see the new Wishlist icon in the top right. A quick tap and that item is saved to your Wishlist.
wm_Screenshot_2012-10-17-21-01-47wm_Screenshot_2012-10-17-21-01-54
"My Wishlist" is an item in the Play Store menu, just like "My Apps." Tapping on it will take you to a vertical list where you can see all your bookmarked apps. Neat.

It doesn't just work on apps, you can save anything in the Play Store. Apps, Music, Movies & TV, Magazines, and Books.

Everything goes into one big list, and you can tell what's what from the color coded prices.
Once again, there's nothing you need to download it to enable it, just wait and your account will get it eventually.

Google Finally Fixes High Resolution Contact Sync, Updates Web Contact Sync With Brand New UI

Folks, I can't believe it myself, but this day has finally come - Google seems to have finally sorted out all its backend and frontend issues with Google contact sync. Jelly Bean's 720x720 hi-res contact support was surely a nice addition, but ended up almost completely useless in our earlier tests: Jelly Bean Bumps Contact Photos To Hi-Res 720x720 But Google Sync Continues To Clobber It With Low-Res Mush.
As of today, all the problems I ran into before are resolved. Removing and re-adding an account on my Nexus 7 now syncs the contact photos in full resolution, whereas before they would either disappear altogether or end up washed out. Like so:

Moreover, and much more importantly, Gmail on the web now has a brand new UI that finally supports setting hi-res contacts straight from the browser. I can't even begin to describe how long overdue this is, so for the past 35 minutes I've been doing victory dances around the desk instead of writing the post.
Check this out.
Here's what the old terrible 96x96px-forcing web UI for setting contact photos looked like:

And here's the new web sync UI - we have drag-and-drop and hi-res support:

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to view the hi-res photo in its original full size on the web, but it's not that big of a deal:

And here is what the contacts look like on the Nexus 7. One of them was added on the device and the other through the web, after which the Nexus 7 Gmail account was removed, re-added, and re-synced:

Thanks, Google! And now, in the words of Alfredo Hernández, it's time to:

Featured: Motorola Shames Google When it Comes to Android Updates

We were all excited back in 2011 when Google acquired Motorola Mobility. One of the many countless thoughts that ran through many minds of Android lovers was, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS! Since the merge, bootloaders have been unlocked, however carriers are the ones who can decide to lock the bootloaders *cough* Verizon *cough.
Since Google and Motorola merged we all thought we would see great things coming from Motorola, however this has not been the case. My mind is boggled as to why. It get worse folks. Motorola had told users that by “the end of quarter 3″ all devices would be updated to the newest version of Android ICE CREAM SANDWHICH!! Ummmm, yeah the newest version is now Jellybean and it is now quarter 4. So, what happened to the updates here Motorola?!
So Motorola’s resolution? They re-configured their “device software mapping” process, which has now left many devices stuck with no updates at all. Leaving poor users currently on Gingerbread. Gingerbread, my gosh, that is so old it’s hard to remember what it even looks like. Tell me something Motorola, how is that pleasing the customer? How are you gaining the trust and loyalty of the consumers here? You aren’t winning any favors here. The only thing you are winning is a spot right next to HTC in the bankruptcy pile. I”m sure they wouldn’t make it that far of course however, there are quite a few moto lovers out there who really enjoyed their Droid 3, Atrix 3G, and Photon 4G. Well, I can vouch for the Droid 3 users, but the other two I”m not as familiar with. These devices will actually NEVER see Android 4.0. So folks who have these devices, if you were hoping for an update, I suggest you figure out some other financial means to upgrade because there is no upgrade coming.
For those devices are still within the update schedule, want to know when you get your updates? Not until the year is almost over, which puts Motorola at the second company to release updates a YEAR after the official update has been released. That such a shame. I would have expected so much more from Motorola. This is all speculation of course, so it could even longer given the current track record of Motorola, but do not quote me. Maybe Motorola will throw out some surprises.
My last point I am trying to make here is, how exactly does this make Google look? I would have to say pretty bad. I have to wonder how Google feels about it? It sends a bad message on to others seeing as Google merged with Motorola for one specific reason. So far they have not delivered. So if Google can’t deliver what they promise, which is the full Google experience, why should anyone else have to?
Discus…. :-)

Google Planning To Make Android A Closed System?

Android is quickly becoming one of the most popular operating systems around and this is mostly because of its open nature. However, not all is as it seems. Many open-source advocates have criticized Google for keeping the operating system one of the most “closed” open platforms ever. Before you get confused, Google’s Chris DiBona says that’s all nonsense, pointing out the over 10 million lines of Android code that are under an open-source license.
However, with the recent purchase of Motorola Mobility by Google, this may soon change. It will be a big temptation for the search giant to close off Android, to gain more control of their OS.
With a hardware foothold via Motorola, Google can now pretty much force updates to the latest Android releases, reduce Android fragmentation, and also make sure hardware requirements for the OS are standardized. However, these advantages do come at a cost. With the mobile business shifting the way it is, Google needs to be part of the changes in the industry. This means that better integration of Android with Motorola Mobility hardware, which can shut out other developers from experimenting and tinkering with the OS.
It’s the inevitable result of the market getting more competitive. Google’s choice to buy Motorola Mobility and its hardware assets was a good decision in the long run for the company. However, the fact that it brings the temptation of closing down their popular software platform from outside interference is bad news for developers.
We’ll have to see what choice Google makes in the long run.
